Raleigh North Carolina
Raleigh is the capital city of North Carolina. The state’s second largest city, it is located in the north central region of the state. Raleigh is known as the “City of Oaks” for its many oak trees, which line the streets in the heart of the city. The city covers a land area of 116.8 square miles in Wake County. Raleigh is an early example of a planned city. Its original design was inspired by the garden city movement, which was popular in England throughout the late 19th century. It remained mostly agrarian until the 1940s, but has since grown substantially with more than 200 retail stores and 70 bars and restaurants downtown.
